West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congressman Mamata Banerjee said her party would agree to a national caste-based census if all political parties reached consensus on the issue.
The TMC chief’s statement came against the backdrop of a 10-party delegation from Bihar led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi to push for a caste-based census .
“When there is a discussion and if a consensus is reached, I will have no problem accepting it. I will not fight if all political parties and all states come to a consensus. Let the political parties, the MCs and the central government come to a consensus, ”Banerjee said.
Banerjee said, “Nitish-ji asked his questions on this issue. Let’s see how others react.
Statistics on the different castes will help to effectively formulate development programs, as many of them have so far not benefited from their actual population, said the CM of Bihar.
The BJP leadership has so far not taken a categorical stance on the issue which has been lapped up by a number of regional parties, many of which are rivals in different states.
