Many of the short hook phrases above are easy to pronounce. But if you really want to show off, you’ll want to memorize the entire Green Lantern Oath. A chant uttered by all members of DC Comics’ Green Lantern Corps while recharging their rings, the oath was both a magical slogan and an oath:
“In the brightest day / In the darkest night / No evil will escape my sight / Let those who worship the power of evil / Beware of my power – the light of Green Lantern!”
In reality, the Lanterns do not have need recite the oath to recharge their rings of power in some comic book continuities. Still, it’s a testament to the dedication of the Corps members that they took the time to express their commitment to the team before they took to the skies to hit a villain’s head with an emerald green boxing glove. Comic book heroes regularly experience crises of faith, so it’s good that the lantern slogan includes reminders of what a green lantern is supposed to do.
Over time, DC introduced different lantern bodies, including blue, red, indigo, orange, purple, white, black, and sinestro (yellow) bodies. Each body had its own oath to recite (with the orange lantern oath, “What is mine is mine and mine and mine. And mine and mine and mine! Not yours!” Being particularly fun to recite).
Still, if you’re looking to go old-school, nothing beats the Green Lantern Corps Oath, which continues to send shivers down the spines of new initiates.
