This article contains spoilers for the mid-credit scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 2!

Fans of all ages were rushing to the theater when sonic the hedgehog 2 finally makes its debut. The sequel to the surprise hit video game movie managed to score even more positives from old and new blue blur fans! But when the credits started rolling, something popped up that no one expected.

That’s right, the infamous Shadow the Hedgehog is canon in the Sonic Cinematic Universe and is being teased to be our colorful characters’ next nemesis. But who is Shadow? Where did he come from? And what could its inclusion in the cinema bring?

Shadow the Hedgehog debuted in the 2001 game Sonic Adventure 2. The character was created by Takashi Iizuka, who has worked on the Sonic series since Sonic 3 in 1994. Currently, he is vice president of product development for the sonic the hedgehog series and the leader of Sonic Team. Shadow was created with the intention of introducing a new rival for Sonic, developing the character while laying out the “good versus evil” storylines for the game.

In the story of Sonic Adventure 2, we learn the origin of Shadow. He was genetically created by Professor Gerald Robotnik, grandfather of Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik, in the headquarters of his floating space station known as Space Colony ARK. His original intention was to find a way to cure his granddaughter, Maria, from a fatal disease. Over time, Shadow and Maria form a strong bond, but in the meantime, the Guardian Units of Nations (GUN) see Robotnik’s experiments as a threat.

During a coup, GUN publishes a false story that Project Shadow is too dangerous and invades the ARK. Their intention was to destroy anyone involved in Project Shadow, but to save the Professor as the cause of an “accident”. During the invasion, Maria is shot and seriously injured, but manages to send Shadow into an escape pod before it’s too late. At the start of Sonic Adventure 2, Dr. Eggman learns of Shadow’s existence and resurrects him in order to defeat Sonic and take over the world. Shadow starts stealing the Chaos Emeralds and is mistaken for Sonic by GUN soldiers.

With its dark story, cocky attitude, and sleek design, Shadow has quickly become a favorite among Sonic fans. Despite his hopeless death at the end of Sonic Adventure 2Shadow was soon making appearances in the future Sonic Games. He even starred in his own game, in 2005 shadow the hedgehogwhich revealed even more about its mysterious origins and offered several routes for players to choose from.

Shadow on the big screen

So, now that we know Project Shadow is canon in the Sonic movies, what does it mean for sonic the hedgehog 3? There are already a ton of possibilities and a solid story that could easily translate into a major movie. But fans shouldn’t necessarily assume that’s what Paramount plans to do as faithfully as possible. On the one hand, while the Sonic the movies have a ton of heart, they don’t exactly stay dramatic for too long at a time. The two already existing Sonic the films are action-adventure comedies, so it’s fair to assume that the third film will be more or less the same. While we probably won’t see Maria cling to life and send Shadow to earth, we could have Sonic reach out to Shadow like he did Knuckles. The two, having lost a loved one and aspiring to start a family, could face a similar bond. Perhaps, unlike Knuckles, Shadow flatly refuses Sonic’s offer.

Speaking of Maria, there is no concrete evidence that she would make an appearance. But that doesn’t mean Robotnik will be erased from Project Shadow. During the mid-credit scene of Sonic 2, an agent reports to GUN Commander Walters that Project Shadow was revealed while they were erasing Robotnik from their database. Coincidence? Like in the games, it looks like the Robotnik family is most definitely tied to Project Shadow. While Jim Carrey’s hilarious Robotnik is currently in limbo, with no sign yet whether or not he survived this explosive showdown with Sonic, at the very least we might see him in a series of amusing flashbacks. . As for Professor Gerald Robotnik, his ultimate demise involved a public outcry against humanity and a recorded execution. So it’s probably safe to say that her character will also be softened for the big screen.

But what could that mean plot-wise? With the Chaos Emeralds in the world, Shadow will likely wake up and begin their hunt. Audiences will mistake the rival hedgehog for Sonic, and the blue blur will start a race around the world to both clear his name and save the planet once again. It’s perhaps safe to bet that fan-favorite agent Stone, upon learning of Project Shadow, will be the one to wake up the black hedgehog and strike a deal with him. Maybe Stone’s plan is to bring Robotnik back with the help of the Chaos Emeralds and hope Shadow will do the dirty work for him? He made an appearance during that very mid-credit scene disguised as Agent GUN, after all.

Whoever the writers behind the Sonic movies have planned, one thing is for sure. The following Sonic the movie is probably going to feature a ton of fun, a ton of references, and a ton of laughs. I, for one, can’t wait to see what they have planned with Sonic’s fan-favorite rival.
