It has been known for some time that the legendary director Guillermo del Toro had an adaptation of Pinocchio in the works. Yet other than some news about the casting and the fact that it would be released on Netflix, not much is known. Ron Perlman recently sat down with Inverse to discuss Alley of nightmares and he also shared information about the upcoming adaptation, including his role in the film and its setting, which seems to take a more personal and historical approach to the famous fable.
Perlman will play Mangiafuoco in the film, a father of pro-fascist Italy. He tries to attract Pinocchio to the cause of the country, a common thread which represents a basic principle of the story of Pinocchio. While Disney has interpreted this concept in a much more kid-friendly and accessible way, it looks like del Toro will bring in a bit of history to represent this element of the story. The director also said that Frankenstein was a great inspiration for the film. In the interview with Inverse, Perlman said the following:
“Well, Guillermo Pinocchio takes place in Mussolini’s Italy, which is a fascist setting. The vanity of the film is that Pinocchio is the perfect soldier because he is not human. So he never questions orders. He is not scared. He is invulnerable. He is everything a perfect soldier should be. “
Pinocchio will be played by a newcomer Gregory Mann. The film will also star Ewan McGregor like Cricket, David Bradley like Geppetto, Tilda swinton like a fairy with turquoise hair, Christoph Waltz like Fox and Cat, Cate Blanchett like Colombe, Finn wolfhard like Lampwick / Lucignolo, Jean Turturro as Master Cherry, Tim blake nelson as a check, and Burn Gorman as a rifleman. Del Toro directs the film alongside Marc Gustafson. Pinocchio will be an animated stop-motion musical, produced in collaboration with the Jim Henson Company.
From now on, 2022 will give birth to two Pinocchio movies, with Disney also set to release a live-action story for Disney +. This project will be led by Robert zemeckis and star Tom hanks, Cynthia Erivo, Luke evans, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Keegan-Michael Key, Lorraine Bracco, and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as the main character. This is just one of many Disney live-action stories in the works, with films also on their way to The little Mermaid, Hercules, Peter Pan, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Robin Hood.
Pinocchio is scheduled to air on Netflix in the last quarter of 2022.
The new series will air next month.
