State Senator Brian Kelsey (R-Germantown) held a Zoom press conference on Monday to denounce his federal indictment as politically motivated. Kelsey appeared with the Senate Chamber as a backdrop.

Here’s what Kelsey had to say:

Look, this is nothing but a political witch hunt. The Biden administration is trying to get me out because I’m a conservative and I’m the Tennessee Democratic Party’s No.1 target. I only won my seat 51-49% last time around, and Democrats believe that will make a difference. They are wrong. These 5-year-old unsubstantiated allegations have been investigated and reconsidered. They were wrong then, and they are wrong now. I am totally innocent and can’t wait to be cleared at trial.

Kelsey’s attorney, Ty Howard, also spoke during the brief call.

“Let me state clearly and empathetically from the start, these claims are false,” Howard said. “Sen. Kelsey has committed no crime. He’s innocent. And he’s looking forward to his day in court.”

“Despite this reckless indictment, Senator Kelsey and his legal team have great faith in our justice system,” Howard said. “He can’t wait to be fully vindicated in court. Out of respect for the legal process, we will not be taking any questions today and this will be our only public comment during the course of this matter.
