Madhan Selvaraj, president of the Edmonton Movie Club and executive producer of Canadian Movie Carp, said his company was part of the filming of the project, which features Indian personalities.

“This is part of a series of 10 episodes and it is an episode that is being shot here, this episode being called Sherlock. It is based on a novel by a renowned Indian writer named MT Vasudevan Nair and it is based on his novel, and it’s like Sherlock Holmes. There’s a cat in the story and his name is Sherlock. When you watch the movie, you’ll understand why we called him that,” Selvaraj said.

The Netflix series will be a drama and is a partial representation of the writer’s time in San Jose in the 1990s.

“The project location is a small town in New Jersey, and we’re trying to pretend that Sherwood Park is a 90s town in New Jersey. We looked for a 90s-style town and we found a house in Sherwood Park, but there were visa delays, so I ended up donating my Village on the Lake home to Sherwood Park,” he said. “The great thing about this project is that Sherwood Park is going to be in the limelight. It shows the lake and we also shot in Fort Saskatchewan and Josephburg.

The project is directed by Mahesh Narayanan and will feature Fahadh Faasil, who is well known in India.

“The actor is an A-lister and is huge. He is one of India’s greatest actors and the director has done a lot of fantastic movies and it will have a lot of audiences and Sherwood Park will be on the world map and that’s really good for us because once you do one, it opens the door to more,” Selvaraj said.

Selvaraj said he pushed for the project to be filmed in Sherwood Park because he is a local resident and wanted to see the community in the spotlight.

“I live in Sherwood Park and I have a non-profit organization called Edmonton Movie Club, which is also based in Sherwood Park and we bring in a lot of movies and we have a film festival,” Selvaraj explained. “During our festival, many actors and filmmakers come to present their films. This is the third project we’ve been involved in, but it’s the first to come to Sherwood Park.

With the success of this project, Selvaraj expects more movies to see Sherwood Park and Strathcona County as a great place to shoot.

There have also been economic benefits for local businesses.

“It was also an economic boost because all the people, the crew and the cast, stayed at the Sherwood Park hotels here in the Emerald Hills area. They stayed there for 15-18 days and spent money on food, coffee and those who came from India went shopping.

The series is set to premiere on Netflix in August or September.
