Congress Speaker Sonia Gandhi has formed an empowered action group to consider suggestions made by strategist Prashant Kishor to overhaul the party ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the chief spokesperson said on Monday. Randeep Surjewela.
The members of this empowered group will be announced shortly, Surjewala said, and they will address the “political challenges” ahead of us ahead of the general election.
The development came amid reports that Kishor-founded electoral consultancy firm I-Pac linked up with Telengana’s TRS government over the weekend. After the West Bengal elections last year, Kishor claimed he would no longer be involved in I-Pac’s work. However, the tie-up with TRS came after Kishor spent two days in Hyderabad. When asked on Monday, Surjewala avoided saying whether this was a dispute in light of Kishor’s offer to not only work with the Congress party, but also join it.
“As you know, an eight-member committee reviewed Prashant Kishor’s proposals and submitted a report on Thursday. Today she held a meeting and based on the discussions, the President of the Congress decided to constitute an Empowered Action Group,” Surjewala said, adding, “I will be happy to tell you its constitution and composition. . You will then get a response indicating who is and who is not a member of the empowered action group. To date, these are two important ways forward — these are two important ways to restructure, to rethink, to recalibrate our strategy in the national elections as well as in the run up to 2024. I wouldn’t comment for the moment on any other action.”
Committee members who assessed Kishor’s suggestions and submitted a report included KC Venugopal, Digvijaya Singh, Ambika Soni, Randeep Surjewala, Jairam Ramesh, Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who are expected to meet again on Tuesday.
A senior executive told HT that Kishor’s enthronement is now more or less certain. There will probably be one last meeting between Gandhi and Kishor. Contacted by HT, Kishor said he had nothing to say about the new empowered group.
Surjewala gave details of an upcoming three-day party meeting that would analyze the reasons for Congress’ electoral defeat in five states. The three-day brainstorming session is scheduled to be held in Udaipur on May 13.
“Deliberations will focus on the current political, social and economic situation and the challenges it poses to our society and the nation. Issues relating to the welfare and trampling of rights of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Backward Classes, Minorities, Kisans and Khet Mazdoors, Religious and Linguistic Minorities, Women, Social Justice and Empowerment, Youth Empowerment will all be deliberated at Nav Sankalp Shivir “, did he declare.
The party then issued a statement announcing that six groups had been formed to examine each of these sectors. The organizers of these commissions are the leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge (politics), former foreign minister Salman Khurshid (social justice and empowerment), former finance minister P Chidambaram (economy), the General Secretary Mukul Wasnik (Organization), Former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda (Farmers and Agriculture) and Punjab Congress President Amrinder Singh Warring (Youth and Empowerment). Each commission has nine members.
