The University of Rochester is strong academically (# 47 in National Universities, # 30 in Best Value Schools), has an excellent research program, caring professors and many resources (labs, many libraries, outdoor spaces, and sports facilities). The schools of business, engineering, music, nursing, UR medicine (6 hospitals), among others, are excellent. UofR offers 275 clubs and organizations and has a beautiful campus! Food is good and varied and there are 14 locations around campus to enjoy it. Safety is a real issue only if you walk in town very late at night in places you are not supposed to go. Rochester ranks among the best cities to live in the US! The negative reviews are recent and I believe have to do with the protests concerning the Middle East conflict. The administration dealt with these protests in a pacific and fair way. I advise a visit to Uof R to see for yourself and talk with students and alumni to learn this is a great place to study and make your home.

I really try to be optimistic but there is just not much good to say about this school. If you ever have any issues with billing, health, parking, technology issues, etc. you will spend years on hold with bitter people who are reluctant to help you. The campus dining is abysmal, food poisoning is the norm. The city is crime ridden and dangerous, several of my peers experienced break ins to their off campus houses and vehicles. The professors can be quite unprofessional as well, I once had a teacher tell us in a group discussion that the American flag is a symbol of racism and asked us to individually expand on that, and to my surprise many of the students in that class agreed, which was a tough pill to swallow given the sacrifices my grandfather and many other Americans made to this country to allow us to be in school today. For spending almost a quarter million dollars on this “experience”, I feel extremely let down by this university and severely regret my college choice.

I'm a current junior at University of Rochester. My overall experience at University of Rochester has been below average. I would say it is not a safe area at all, the food is only good when parents/other people are touring the school, and definitely pay attention to anything you sign up for (summer housing, different meal plans, or really anything) because they WILL NOT inform you about additional charges to your student account and are very stingy about money. Rule of thumb: don't trust a damn thing from this school unless you're willing to give up more money for it...
