Amid chorus for single leadership, AIADMK holds meeting of district secretaries and officials

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) On Tuesday, a consultation meeting was held with district party secretaries and other officials to discuss various resolutions amid party workers swelling outside Royapettah headquarters in Chennai and shouting slogans to demand a single leadership for the progress of the party.

The meeting took place against the backdrop of allegations that the AIADMK leadership is not functioning well as an opposition party and the recent spat between the principal secretary of the AIADMK organization , C Ponnaiyan, and BJP leaders.

The meeting, which banned leaders from carrying mobile phones indoors, was chaired by AIADMK Coordinator O Pannerselvam and Co-Coordinator Edappadi K Palaniswami and saw the participation of several senior leaders including KP Munusamy, D Jayakumar, C Vee Shanmugam, SP Velumani among others. .

The AIADMK called a meeting of its general council and executive committee on June 23 to discuss several crucial issues facing the party and the latest policy developments.

Speaking to the media, Jayakumar said many officials have come out in favor of the party moving towards a single leadership, but the party high command will take the final call. “In today’s meeting, there was also a discussion about single leadership and it was done in a constructive way. The majority of them (district secretaries and other officials) pleaded for one leadership unique for a stronger party like AIADMK given the circumstances today, but no names were discussed, the party high command will decide,” he said.

When asked if anything was discussed about AIADMK leader VK Sasikala at the meeting, Jayakumar said, “There is no need to discuss someone who has no no connection with the party”, adding: “Talking about her is a waste of time”.

Commenting on the setbacks the party has witnessed since the Lok Sabha polls in 2019, Jayakumar, former MP for Royapuram, said victory and losses are an integral part of parties and just like how they bounced back from defeats electoral on previous occasions, they will emerge victorious in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and form the “Amma government” by also achieving victory in the 2026 Assembly elections in the state.
